Montréal (Lachine)

Lachine is one of the nineteen urban boroughs of the city of Montreal, in Quebec (Canada). Before the Quebec municipal reorganizations of 2002, Lachine was a municipality resulting from the merger of the cities of Lachine and Saint-Pierre in 2000.

Located in the southwest of the island of Montreal, upstream of the Lachine Canal, the borough of Lachine was settled during the time of New France; the first land concessions were granted in 1667. Under the British regime, the opening of the Lachine Canal in 1824 and the arrival of the railway in 1847 led to the development of the main industrial centre of Canada at the beginning of the 20th century. This situation would propel the economic development of Lachine and the entire Montreal region.

The territory of the Lachine borough has an area of ​​20 km2 and a population of 44,489 inhabitants (in 2016). It is located in the west of the city of Montreal in Quebec. Lachine is a grouping of two cities (Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens and Lachine) merged in 2000. Two years later, Lachine was merged with all the other cities and districts of the island of Montreal and became a borough of Montreal.
